South America, Here We Come!

Three Years of Waiting

Hello to all our friends and armchair travellers. It has been a l-o-n-g three years but we are now only 48 hours from lift-off. This will be the first time we have travelled internationally since we were unceremoniously sent home from Morocco in March 2020. That was a memorable experience and we are hoping this trip will be longer and more successful. We have not even crossed the border into the USA in three years. New passports in hand ... off we go!!

We fly out of Toronto on Monday, February 6 at noon. First stop is Miami for a short layover. Then a longer flight on to Santiago, Chile where we have another short layover. Final destination and actual starting point is Punta Arenas in the far south of Chile. We are planning to spend time exploring Patagonia by land and sea, travelling through the mountains of Argentina, going to the Falkland Islands, then to Montevideo in Uruguay and finishing the trip at Iguazu Falls, Brazil, before flying home from Buenos Aires. About 6 weeks in total. 

We are hoping you will be our companions as we move from place to place. As always, Jim has planned an action packed and exciting trip which is bound to be filled with new experiences, lots of learning and fun!!!

  Monday, June 24, 2024   We settled into the luxury of Makokola with great ease. After four weeks of action-packed travel, we were finally taking a break. Breakfast in the dining area at a table overlooking Lake Malawi was a treat. The wait staff are very attentive and willing to engage in conversation. The food was exceptional, especially their homemade muesli. It had whole macadamia nuts in it along with other delicious morsels. Following breakfast we walked around the resort buildings. The gardens are gorgeous, the pool very inviting and the several lounge areas very comfortable. The lounge areas are all covered but open air with wonderful views of the beach and the lake. It was a great start to the day.   We returned to our room which also has a wonderful view of the lake and I eagerly attacked the blog which has recently been ignored. And On To Melbourne

And On To Melbourne Friday November 3 - Saturday November 11, 2023 Friday November 3, 2023   We arrived in Melbourne at about 3:30 this afternoon. We had exactly 90 minutes to collect our luggage, rent a car, drive across town and find the restaurant where we were meeting friends at 5 pm. Fortunately, we know the city fairly well; we are accustomed to driving on the left hand side of the road; and, in spite of it being Friday late afternoon, the traffic was moving very smoothly. So off we went … we did pretty well. We arrived at the restaurant at 5:11 pm.   Seven friends were waiting for us. It is a group of friends who all have children approximately the same age. When we lived here the teenagers all gathered with a youth leader at the church for a Friday night activity. We initiated the idea that if the kids could go out to have some fun, maybe the parents should do the same. So we started to eat at a restaurant near the church every Friday. Punta Arenas to Puerto Natales

Monday, February 6, 2023   Well, the long awaited trip has begun. Irene O’Toole, our travelling companion, arrived at our home just after 8 am and the taxi to the airport arrived at 8:30. Bags packed, luggage loaded, we were off to the airport. We arrived in Toronto in plenty of time for our flight and got checked in with little fuss. The wheelchair agents were quite litigious in their approach and it took some time and some additional paperwork to arrange for two wheelchairs for Irene and I. With the support of our ‘pushers’ we made our way to the Air Canada lounge and enjoyed lunch before we boarded our plane.   The first leg of our journey was quite pleasant, a short flight to Miami. We had a 4 hour layover in Miami. Sadly, the lounge was closed so we found a restaurant area near our gate and enjoyed margaritas and some Mexican food while we waited.
